week2.communitywalks

Week 2 and I finished with all green! While there some questions from friends about my obsession with the Fitbit, a few strange looks from neighbors as I went up and down the stairs outside my apartment ten times, and the development of that same urge you get to check Facebook now transferring to my need to check my Fitbit app - all in all it was a great week! My mother and I just last night were discussing the fact that we have all become ever so slightly addicted to our Fitbits. They give us purpose. If we forget it or the battery dies, I honestly have no reason to move. Either way, we see it as at least a healthy addition that gets us moving more! And not just moving, but helping us enjoy our community more and discover things we never knew about before!

Local farmers market that is way bigger since the last time I visited!

For example, I had a great Saturday roaming around town with Mike and visiting the local farmers market where we made some new poet friends and ran into multiple other friends/family! I also got some tasty fresh veggies too! We then headed over to the zoo and got in a lot of steps just walking around!

The gorillas might not do so well getting Fitbit steps in unless they walk in circles repeatedly
(and yes I have done that to get my last few steps to reach my goal!).

I even found some great trails I never knew about. Thanks to google maps, though, I spotted them! One of my favorite things in life (even better than the Fitbit) are sunsets - and these trails were perfect for watching the sunset while also scoring more steps!

Beautiful sunset! And the best part, is it will happen tomorrow too! :)

So overall, it was a great week of walking around my community! Getting out and moving more helps me feel not just healthier but happier and more connected to the people and places around me. I appreciate those of you reading this and cheering me on (even if it is an addiction)!

Where is your favorite place to walk around in your community? (This is my attempt to get you all to leave comments so please do! I like connecting with my online community, too!)

week1.happynewblog

Well hello, folks! It's been a while since I've blogged - you might remember my "5k-a-day" blog I started in the middle of my quarter life crisis. Yes it was May 2012 and I had just turned 25 and realized I need to get my butt moving more. Well guess what else I realized? Blogging everyday takes ALOT of work. I admire those who can keep it going (such as my buddy Ajyra with her DIY mymaisonplace blog). I can't even count how many journals I have attempted to start and haven't kept up. Each time I create this fantasy that one day it will turn into a novel…. yeah I guess novels usually are longer than 5 pages though. Same with blogging. I love the idea of reflecting and sharing, but man I stink at keeping the darn thing going!

So here I am, making yet another promise to blog. But I plan to do it this time just once a week. I have come to accept that this thing might just die out yet again - it might just turn into once a month - but oh well. Life would be boring if we never did anything because we thought we couldn't keep it going.

I have also decided to make my focus instead of doing 5 kilometers a day, but rather doing at least 5 miles a day. I recently became addicted to my new FitBit thanks to my aunt Chris, and the Fitbit pedometer and program recommends taking about 10,000 steps, or moving about 5 miles, everyday. This includes not just time out actually running, but all the steps you take at work, around the house, and so on. I am not aiming to beat a time like I was before, or to do it all while running. Rather, I just want to move more. Once I reach this goal of simply moving 5 miles each day, I may expand on my goals from there. For proof, because I'm all about accountability and measurement - I plan to post my reports from my Fitbit app so you skeptics out there believe me! Here are the last 4 days since January 1st (when I decided to start my goal - oh and yes it does happen to fall around the time people make new years resolutions…but in an effort to not totally set this goal up to fail I will refrain from calling it such a thing.)

Cheers to a new year, new blog, and a new goal of just getting out there and moving more!
